Note:This was taped in 2006 and Ross quotes the
2006 rule book.
Specifically, the 2007 rules book states there should be 3 counters, not
2 as Ross stated. The rules also state there should be a minimum of 5
judges at the Area level and 7 at Division or District. In 2006,
the numbers were 5 for judges and 2 for counters with 7 and 3 for
Int’l. Be sure to check the current rule book and manual for up-to-date information;
the rules may change from year to year.

Welcome Toastmasters
Contest Judge Workshop - Ross Mackay
Ross has participated in ,and judged, all levels of Toastmasters
speech contests and in 1995 placed 3rd at the World Champion of
Public Speaking.” In this thought provoking 29 minute presentation,
Ross Mackay confronts the reality of personal bias in contest
judging and separates fact from fiction.
First presented in 2006 at the district 60
officer training, this workshop is a reality check that gives both
judge and observer a clear understanding of the what judging is all
about, and how to do it.
While a couple of changes have occurred in the
rules since this was first recorded, Past International Director
Bill Bienia commented " I would highly recommend the video be
viewed by both judges and contestants".
When we first recorded this, it was for the
benefit of a few who couldn't attend. Ross didn't know he would be taped
and hadn't dressed for the camera, so he was resistant to the
idea of us posting it online. As a professional speaker it is rare
to see him in front of an audience in anything less than a suit. He
relented when we convinced him to give it up for Toastmasters. As a 'thank you' for Ross, I took the liberty
of adding a plug for his new workshop. Visit Ross Mackay at

and check him out.
If you like this one and want more, send us an
email. I also recorded another workshop on speech evaluations that
is really good.
